When broken, it shatters into many small blunt pieces, which prevent major injuries. And it is capable of withstanding abrupt temperature change. Hence it is used when strength, thermal resistance and safety are important considerations, such as sliding doors, windows, balustrades, curtain walls, baths & shower enclosures, and so on.
